QUITTERS NEVER WIN: THE COSTS OF LEAVING SOCIAL MEDIA

Image
Forget Lolcats. If we quit using sites like Facebook, we'll miss opportunities for self-expression, personal growth, learning, support, and civic exchange. Birgerking/Flickr Simple solutions have been proposed to help users cope with the vulnerability of disclosing information on the social web. These remedies are clear and decisive, but they demand significant trade-offs -- perhaps greater sacrifice than typically is acknowledged. One such option, which  Farhad Manjoo , the technology columnist at  Slate , bluntly spelled out in a two-word article, " How to Stay Private on Facebook ," is "Quit Facebook." Manjoo offers this security-centric path for folks who are anxious about the service being " one the most intrusive technologies ever built ," and believe that " the very idea of making Facebook a more private place borders on the oxymoronic, a bit like expecting modesty at a strip club ". Bottom line: stop tuning in and st...

IOS 6.1.2 UPDATE TO FIX IPHONE PASSCODE PROBLEMS

Image
A few days ago Apple felt the need to issue an iOS 6.1.1 update for the iPhone 4S because of network connectivity issues, while those with the iPhone 5 had to stick with iOS 6.1. However, things are still not looking good for Apple, as they may need to issue another update to fix iPhone passcode problems that some users have been experiencing. The iPhone passcode lock system has come under scrutiny before, and now there is a new problem where the system can be bypassed. If we are to believe the rumor then this exploit can be found on all iPhones with iOS 6.1 installed, and if this is the case then we await the release date of iOS 6.1.2. Many iPhone owners will believe that this is not a bug and is just something specific to jailbroken iPhones, but you would be wrong, as it certainly looks to be a standard iPhone to us. When Apple first launched iOS there were a few issues here and there, but as they update iOS to newer versions there seems to be far more issues, even the lat...

THE PASSWORD IS NOT DEAD

Image
The password has been dead for 20 years or so, but it continues to persist and only a fundamental change in how the internet operates will finally put a nail in its coffin. The password has been around since Roman times but despite being labelled as dead for 20 years, is still fundamental to how the world works. The Romans invented passwords over 2,000 years ago. Passwords or watchwords were used in the military, passed on each day from unit to unit in a coordinated and simple fashion. Fail-safes were even built into a system which was simple, straightforward, and most importantly difficult to crack. Today people are creating new passwords every single day in order to gain access to the latest social network, order something through an online store or just to view content on a website. By contrast to the time of Caesar, passwords today are complex, confusing and, most worryingly of all, easy to crack. It seems as if we have not come a long way over the last ...

THE BURDEN OF APPLE IOS

Image
When Apple released the iPhone in 2007, they released iPhone OS (later known as iOS) with it. The device and the operating system necessitated each other. The two were birthed into the world together on the same stage. The  industrial design  of Apple's new phone was a drastic departure from other mobile devices at that time. The input method was entirely touch based, eschewing the then-accepted truth that physical buttons were the only productive and reliable interface. The operating system was, for many of its users, and introduction to direct manipulation in interface design. The hardware decisions they chose to make were both forward thinking and full of risk. In that way, the physical design of the phone was a concerted bet on their own ability to produce software that could excel at driving it. By 2007 (really, much earlier), mobile phones were already ubiquitously successful. But, smartphones weren't really selling in large numbers. With the releas...

APPLE iOS 6.1 iPHONELOCK-SCREEN HACK

Image
Apple iPhone users are being warned about a new security flaw affecting iOS 6.1, which allows hackers to bypass the smartphone’s lock-screen. News of the flaw emerged earlier this week following the release of a YouTube video that walks users through the hack. The  video shows an iPhone running iOS 6.1  being unlocked using a series of steps involving the emergency call screen and the power button. The process takes under a minute and allows the phone's contacts, photos and call logs to be accessed.     At the time of writing, the video had been viewed more than 350,000 times. In a statement, the consumer electronics giant said it was "aware of the issue" and working to deliver a fix in a future software updates. This is not the first issue Apple has encountered problems with iOS 6.1 since its release on January 28. It was reported that many iPhone 4S users were unable to make calls, send text messages or browse the internet after upgr...

PROTECT SMARTPHONE THEFT

Image
There's a growing black market for stolen mobile devices, with crooks following supply and demand trends just as legitimate merchants do. But there are ways to safeguard your investment in mobile devices like the iPhone 5 -- and protect the vital personal data stored on your smartphone. Here are five tips to help you prevent thefts and beat mobile device thieves at their own game: 1. Don't leave your smartphone unattended.  No one would leave $700 on the table while going to the coffee shop counter to pick up an order. But people leave their shiny new mobile devices unattended all the time, providing a golden opportunity for thieves. Don't make that mistake. 2. Install a tracking app.  Both Android and Apple smartphones offer free tracking apps you can install to help you recover your device if someone steals it. The apps allow you to log onto another device like a laptop or tablet and track your missing device's current location. 3. Be aware of yo...

WINDOW 8 FAILS TO EXCITE

Image
Leaving Microsoft’s statements aside, it’s pretty clear that Windows 8 isn’t selling very well right now, with most users criticizing the GUI changes that Microsoft introduced in the operating system. But if you’re asking Paulo Camara, head of mobility services at IT firm Ci&T, one of the reasons why Windows 8 still fails to excite is the upcoming Windows 9 that’s expected to bring many important changes for Windows users. “The next Windows version certainly will include the strengths of Windows 8 and fix its main gaps,” he was quoted as saying by  InformationWeek . Does this mean that Windows 9 will bring back a Start button? Nobody knows for sure, but Steve Ballmer has already made it clear that Microsoft had no intention to abandon the Start Screen. Camara, on the other hand, says that Windows 9 is very likely to “have a faster adoption by enterprises” than Windows 8. It remains to be seen when the new Windows 9 will actually arrive, as everybody’s talk...

BitTorrent Sharpens Enterprise Focus, Launches SoShare To Send Large Files, Offering First Terabyte Free

Image
BitTorrent , the once-notorious P2P file sharing site that has turned a new leaf as a legit, distributed computing provider, is today launching  SoShare , a service to send large files from one computer to another, with the first terabyte of files sent free. Out today in beta for Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari for Mac; and Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer for Windows, the service competes with the likes of  YouSendIt , as well as  DropBox , Box  and other cloud-storage and file transfer services. SoShare was previously available in alpha as Share , and it complements  Sync , Bitorrent’s cloud-based service that syncs your computer’s files with a cloud storage service, which itself launched in alpha in January. The idea behind SoShare is to target creative professionals – designers, photographers, musicians, and so on –  who handle large data files and need to send them to others. That makes sense, since it also targets that comm...

I had cancer of the nose' - Governor Sullivan Chime

Image
The Enugu state governor spoke to journalists in Enugu on Monday. Below is what he shared... “Late August or early September, last year, I am not sure again of the dates, but it is about that time. I was privileged to be one of those nominated by the Nigeria Governors Forum to go to Germany to understudy their federal system. A Governor was picked from each of the six geo-political zones. I represented the South-East and of course, we were led by our Chairman, Rotimi Amaechi. “On our way to Germany, I decided to go a little bit earlier, passing through London to do my medicals because of what I will call lack of our time. We do not have time here. So, I decided to take that opportunity, got to London and did my medicals and was certified fit. I was given a clean bill of health. But I had a little growth here (pointing at the right side of his neck) that was not visible to anybody. I am a very observant person. I noticed it, showed it to my doctor an...

10 Reasons Why Guys Don’t Like You

Image
The 10  REASONS  are: 1. YOU LIE TOO MUCH  - Guys aren't stup i d. They can tell when they're being lied too. Don't try to hide who you are because you think a guy won't like the real you. You can't fool somebody forever and once the truth comes out he'll never trust you again. So be yourself to some guys who date you. 2. YOU DON’T APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS HE DOES FOR YOU  - Some guys are horrible with expressing their feelings, but they try to in their own little ways. Sometimes it's something small like picking up a cupcake because they know you'll like it. Lots of times an act like this goes unnoticed, If a guy is trying to show you he cares and you don't see it he'll think you don't care or you don’t love him. Appreciate his efforts please. 3. YOU TEXT & MAKE CALLS TOO MUCH  - Guys like to feel important. If you're on your phone the whole time during dinner they'll feel like you don't care about them. The...

Touching Story Of Nigerian Footballer Victor Moses

Image
This is the story of a young boy whose parents were murdered during 2002 riots in Kaduna. He was aged 11 years at the time. His parents, Mr Austine and Mrs Josephine Moses, were missionaries until they met their untimely death. The boy left his house to play football but returned home to see that all his parents had laboured for had been razed down and he would never see his mother and father again. He was taken to London by his uncle almost immediately after the incident. While in London, he began deploying his football skills. Though his parents were murdered, his passion for football was never killed. He played football for his school and later for a local Tandrige League club until Crystal Palace FC approached him. From that point, his career progressed in leaps and bounds. This player played for England's under 16, 17, 19 and 21 teams between 2005 and 2010 scoring 11 goals for England during this period. He later moved to Wigan Athletic and now he pla...
